As we say goodbye to winter and warmly welcome spring (especially in Toronto), it’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning! This often-needed annual ritual is also a good time to make the repairs around your home that you’ve been meaning to do, but haven’t yet gotten around to. While the idea of cleaning your home from top to bottom may sound refreshing, it is often hard to get started. If you’re thinking about selling, this is the perfect time to get your home in tip-top shape and ready for potential buyers to see.

Below are 5 tips that will help you get started on your spring clean!

De-Clutter

The very first thing that you should do before you begin cleaning is de-clutter. De-cluttering will clear up some space, which will make cleaning a lot easier. This includes everything from your clothes to old dishes that you have not worn or used in a while. Sorting everything into piles of what you want to keep, toss, donate and even sell can make the process a lot more manageable. It is refreshing to finally get rid of things that you haven’t made use of in a long time. De-cluttering and reorganizing go hand-in-hand. While you’re getting rid of stuff you can reorganize storage areas including bookshelves and closets. It’s a good time to store some of your winter clothes away and make room for spring wear.

Carpet Cleaning

Shampooing the carpet in your home is much needed after a winter of muddy shoes and boots have been in and out of the house. It can make your carpet look brand new. You can have it done professionally every 12-18 months or do it yourself by renting a carpet cleaner from your local grocery store, which is much more cost effective. A deep carpet clean will help to remove dirt, dust and allergens that have collected over the year.

Fresh Air

Spring is in the air! It’s time to open up the windows in your home and replace the air that has been trapped all winter long with some cool, fresh air.

Clean

Now it’s time to bring out the supplies and start cleaning. Be sure to get to those surfaces that you normally don’t get to on a regular basis. Things like dusty light bulbs, under furniture and appliances, and floor baseboards are often overlooked. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, it’s best to tackle one room at a time. Within each room, start from one side of the room and work your way around to avoid unfinished jobs. Start from top to bottom to avoid having to re-clean things that you may have gotten dirty again. The satisfaction of having one room complete at a time will make it easier to move onto the next. It can be helpful to make a checklist of everything you want to get to so you don’t forget.

Exterior

Spring is the perfect time to spruce up the exterior of your home. Touching up the exterior with some fresh paint can really make a difference. In addition, power washing can give your home an instant facelift by removing grime that has collected over the winter months. It will also make your windows squeaky clean from the outside. Your patio furniture could also use a good power wash so that it’s ready to go when you’re ready to use it. If you do a lot of outdoor cooking during the spring and summer months, be sure to clean your barbeque. It will make your food taste that much better!

There is no doubt that spring cleaning requires a lot of time and energy, but it’s worth it. It’s best to get all the cleaning that needs to be done out of the way now so you can enjoy spring and summer. It will feel like a great accomplishment! Getting the whole family involved can speed up the process and make a significant difference on the workload. Remember that not everything has to get done in one day or even one weekend. There’s a lot to get to and it may take more than a couple of days, however we hope the above tips will help make your spring clean much easier!
